This regal beast has been cast from a medieval horse pendant, originally found in the riverbanks by the Tower of London. While its enamelled surface may have eroded after 700 years of submission to the tidal forces of the Thames, the bold lines of this crowned beast still stand strong.

An amulet worn for protection by knights and their chargers, pendants such as this were believed to bring good fortune and protection against evil.  Leo’s passant gardant pose demonstrates his determination, meeting others in the eye, unabashed, unafraid. His powerful paw is raised and ready to protect his wearer.
